Introduction to the Eclectic Triphasic Medical System

by John G. Connor, M.Ac., L.Ac.

Barbara and I first met Donald Yance at the Medicines from the Earth Herbal Symposium in June 2005 where we had the good fortune to attend his lectures.  We were immediately struck by the amazing comprehensiveness and depth of his approach to health and healing.  Barbara and I had succeeded very well at integrating acupuncture with craniosacral therapy and had always appreciated the importance of herbs, supplements and nutrition in our practice.  But Donald Yance had taken herbs, botanicals and nutrition to an entirely different level that we had never seen before.  Combined with his extensive clinical experience, exhaustive scientific research and his quest to uncover the healing qualities of every conceivable herb and nutrient and then on top of it to fully integrate it with modern conventional medicine we realized we had finally found someone who had succeeded in doing what we had only imagined as being possible.

Fortunately for us he has formulated his vast knowledge and wisdom into the Eclectic Triphasic Medical System – or simply the ETMS.  The ETMS as envisioned by Donald Yance is a clinically validated system that is rooted in the American Eclectic and Physiomedical herbal traditions interwoven with Traditional Chinese Medicine theory and contemporary clinical nutrition.

The three branches of the ETMS are:
1) The Human Being,
2) The External Environment and
3) the Biological Environment.

The general objectives of the ETMS are:
1) Enhance one’s vitality or life force.
2) Increase one’s efficiency and restore harmony and rhythm.
3) Increase the movement of oxygen, blood and lymph.
4) Correct nutritional deficiencies and excesses.

ETMS protocols are designed to work synergistically with standard conventional medical treatment plans and emphasize the practice of healthy medicine aimed at the root source of ill-health.  Its primary focus is to enhance the vitality of the person and to bring about harmony and balance throughout the body.  This is achieved through the application of synergistic multi-targeting herbal and nutritional formulations, and dietary therapeutics.

Barbara and I have been working closely with Donald Yance and utilizing his Eclectic Triphasic Medical System since 2005 and we have found that it has helped our patients immensely.  We have completed both the Level One and Level Two Professional Clinical Training  programs with Donald Yance in Ashland, Oregon from April 26 – May 1, 2010 and from Sept. 27 – Oct. 2, 2010.  The beauty of his system is that it is all-inclusive and not only includes herbal medicine but it includes acupuncture, nutritional medicine, dietetics, exercise, prayer, Qi gong, music, art, etc. as well as working co-operatively with conventional medical doctors and continuously delving into the latest scientific research in order to extract from these studies anything and everything that can be beneficial for our patients.
